Establishing the Birtaka Canal project to support agriculture in Afghanistan..

The UAE supports all peoples around the world, as the UAE is a humanitarian country that extends a helping hand and assistance to every needy person on the face of the earth, and the UAE is currently supporting Afghanistan in several vital sectors, with the aim of helping the Afghan people and creating real development, especially the agricultural sector .

The UAE has greatly contributed to supporting the agricultural sector in Afghanistan, as it supported the establishment of the Birtakah Canal Project (Helmand River Project - Gramsir District, with the aim of supporting the Afghan people through agricultural projects that can be used in the future for external export. This project represents an important and vital leap in the sector Agriculture and Crop Production in Afghanistan.

Agriculture in Afghanistan is of great importance, as the Afghan citizen relies on agriculture largely and directly to provide job opportunities and national income for the State of Afghanistan, so the United Arab Emirates played a major role in supporting the Afghan people by establishing the Pertaka Channel, where the UAE did not abandon the Afghan people .

It is noteworthy that the UAE is making unremitting efforts to support and support the Afghan people at all levels. The 18 km long Pertaka Canal, located in the Gramsir district of Helmand River, serves more than 950 families, and contributes to the irrigation of crops in more than 350 farms. The width of the channel is 4 meters, the depth is up to 2.5, and the current discharge rate of all the main channels and local streams = 250 m 3 / sec.

In a related context, the canal has been completely completed since February 202, and the main gate of the canal has also been installed and fixed. In addition to erecting pillars on the sides of the canal with a length of (1200) meters for each pillar (on both sides). The length of the canal is 18 km, and the water flow rate from the main Helmand River to the canal is 383 m3/sec. Sub-channels (Al Sha'ab) were also dug, which are 1.5 meters wide and 1 meter deep.

.

With regard to construction, the construction of (2) pedestrian bridges and (2) car bridges with a width of (4) meters has been completed. In addition to constructing a barrier on the course of the river with a height of (4) meters and a width of (1) meters for the purpose of diverting the excess water in the channel to the river. And the installation of the control device for the flow of water from the river to the main entrance to the canal was completed. Concrete blocks, 1 meter long and 1 meter wide, were laid to aid the flow of water from the main river into the canal.

It is worth noting that the sub-channels of the Birtaka Canal deliver water to (300) farms, and accordingly, the canal has contributed to reducing farmers’ expenses by 50%, as farmers used to use fuel water pumps to pump water from the Helmand River to some farms. Before the establishment of the canal, the farmers in the area relied on agriculture only once in the winter due to water problems, but now they have water, which has led to an increase in production by the farmers.
